Brooklyn Borough President 'Furious' With Possible Closure Of Eight Fire Companies

BROOKLYN, NY (WCBS 880) – It looks like Brooklyn has the biggest share of fire house closings due to New York City budget cuts and the outspoken borough president isn't happy about the news.

Eight of the 20 fire houses on the possible closure list are from Brooklyn, that's 40 percent of Brooklyn's stations.

Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz is furious and outraged that any fire companies are on the hit list.

"Of the 20 that they're proposing closure, eight of them are in Brooklyn and guess what, we will not take it on the chin, no way, no how," he said.

Markowitz says the fire commissioner has told the city council that if the closures occur, response time will be delayed.

"You know what that means? The possibility of greater casualties and loss of life and we will not accept it," said Markowitz.
