Local Man Celebrates Milestone Years After Being Hit By Drag Racer

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It's graduation season and it'll be a special day Saturday for a former Long Islander who will be walking down the aisle seven years after being struck by a drag racer.

Saverio Sportella, who once lived in Floral Park, Long Island, was only 14-years-old when he was hit and seriously injured by a car racing down Francis Lewis Boulevard in Queens.

On Saturday, he'll be graduating from Fordham University with a political science degree.

Saverio spent nearly a year in Blythedale Children's Hospital in Westchester County being treated for massive brain injuries.

"I am lucky not only to be alive, but to have a second chance," he told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

Saverio says he appreciates every part of his life. "You only have one life, make the best of it," he said. "It really is a blessing."
