Tickets For Unsafe Bicycle Riding In NYC On The Rise

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Summonses for unsafe bicycling are up 48 percent in New York City over last year.

The NYPD has issued nearly 14,000 tickets so far this year for cyclists who run red lights, ride on sidewalks and bike against traffic.

The New York Post said that's up from more than 9,000 summonses written during the same period last year.

Manhattan and Brooklyn have the largest number of scofflaw bicyclists. Staten Island had the least, with only 66 tickets issued.

The cycling advocacy group Transportation Alternatives said police should focus on the most dangerous offenses.
