All NYC Beaches, Pools Covered By Lifeguards

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – For the first time in years, there are enough lifeguards to cover all of New York city's beaches and pools.

Parks commissioner Adrian Benepe says because of the economy, the city has had no trouble recruiting lifeguards starting at $13.50/hour.

"By the time July 4 weekend rolls around, we'll have a full complement of lifeguards," he said. "We still have the high school kids who have to get out of school, some of the college kids are still finishing up, but it looks like a banner year for lifeguards."

Benepe says more lifeguards means more city beaches and pools can be open for the summer.

Lifeguards work a 48-hour week and all available positions have been filled.
