East Islip High School Tries To Teach Lesson About Drunk Driving Ahead Of Summer

ISLIP TERRACE, NY (WCBS 880) - There is a reason authorities call the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Deadly Days of Summer.

Right in front of East Islip High School, there are two smashed up vehicles.

They're parked there so that students can see what could happen if you drink and drive, drag race, or just become distracted while using a cell phone.

"When you are driving your car, you are guiding a 3, 4, sometimes even 10,000-pound piece of metal that can kill people," says Douglas Death with the Suffolk County Stop DWI program.

"Be smart about yourself. Be smart about what you're doing and don't follow the crowd if the crowd's doing the wrong thing," 17-year-old Jonathan Guterrez, of Students Against Drunk Driving, says.

Another member of the group says, "In this day and age, you really need to be on top of your game because of all the competition and you need to make sure that, you know, you're the best of the best in order to make it in this society."

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi says showing teenagers photos of deadly accidents can scare them into doing the right thing.

"No matter how much they think they're indestructible and no matter how many times the think that 'this won't happen to me,' it can happen to them," he says.
