NYPD Detective, Two Firefighters Arrested In Staten Island Gambling Ring Bust

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Federal authorities said 15 people, including a police detective and two firefighters, have been arrested in connection with a New York City gambling ring.

The suspects were taken into custody Thursday morning. They're accused of running illegal card games on Staten Island.

According to an indictment, the floating poker game operated in various locations, including Hylan and Victory Boulevards and Arthur Kill Road.

New York Police Department Detective Richard Palase, firefighters Michael Bergen and Gerald Parsons and the other defendants, including a retired police sergeant and a retired firefighter, were to make an initial appearance later in the day in federal court in Brooklyn.

At least $2,000 was made and or bet in the games.

Sometimes text messages were used to contact the participants and inform them of the game's latest location, officials said.

Other defendants include a retired police sergeant and a retired firefighter.
