Sources: Wife Willing To Stand By Her Man, But N.Y. Dem Insisted He'd Handle It

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner has come clean.

At a tense press conference on Monday, the six-term New York Democrat admitted to posting a lewd photo of himself on Twitter. The stunning turnaround came following a week of him issuing nothing but denials and often getting surly with reporters, before cutting them off completely.

While addressing the media at the Sheraton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, Weiner made the following statement: “Last Friday night I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle. Once I realized I posted it to Twitter, I panicked, I  took it down and said that I had been hacked. I then continued with that story to stick to that story which was a hugely regrettable mistake.”

Weiner apologized to the Seattle student, who was on the receiving end of the tweet.

Sources told CBS 2 that Weiner decided over the weekend that he would go public with his admission, but had not set a date to do so.  Those sources said the release of new photographs forced him to call Monday’s press conference.

“To be clear, the picture was of me and I sent it. I am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife, Huma, and our family, and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff,” Weiner said.

Sources also said that Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, was willing to stand by her husband as he addressed the media, but that Weiner insisted she not be there, saying “it’s my responsibility. I’ll deal with it.”

In addition, the congressman said that “over the past few years I have engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, and occasionally on the phone with women I have met online.”

Weiner said he “exchanged messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years.” He said “most” of the communications took place before his marriage, but admitted some took place afterward.

One of those women was Meagan Broussard, a 26-year-old single mother from Texas.  She told ABC News that Weiner was “eager  to hear about if I wanted him or thought he was attractive.”

Earlier, conservative author Andrew Breitbart posted two pictures of Weiner on his website, which Breitbart claimed were e-mailed to a young woman, who turned out to be Broussard.

Breitbart said the photographs were sent to the woman from Weiner’s AOL email account via his BlackBerry on May 4

Weiner said that despite his online relationships, he has never met any of the women or “had any physical relationships at any time.”

The Brooklyn and Queens congressman said that he may seek professional help, but tried to take responsibility for his actions stating “this is my own personal mistake.  This is a deep weakness that I have demonstrated.”

Weiner also said he would not resign and that he did not believe that he did anything that broke the law. He said he doesn’t believe he used government resources in sending the messages, and that his staff did not know he had done so.

“I’m not resigning, and I’m going to try very hard to go back to work a better man and a better husband, too,” he said.

However, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called for an ethics committee investigation to see if House rules were broken.  Weiner’s office released a statement shortly thereafter saying “I welcome and will fully cooperate with an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.”

When asked if he would split from his wife, Weiner said he loved wife Abedin very much and that they would not split.

Speaking before Weiner at the same hotel, Breitbart said “everything we’ve reported about this story has been true.”

Weiner came under fire last week for a suggestive photo sent from his Twitter account of a man in grey underwear to a 21-year-old woman.

Before speaking to the media Monday, the congressman had adamantly denied that he sent the photo and claimed he was the victim of a prank.

Weiner had initially said that he was the victim of a hacker and that retained a lawyer to advise him on what legal action should be taken.  His spokesman Dave Arnold had previously said the congressman’s “accounts were obviously hacked.”

The “crotch” photo was first reported Saturday by

After his press conference, Congressman Weiner left the hotel through a back way followed by photographers.

“there’s not a politician out there that hasn’t done something stupid…” – so that justifies it?

how about this instead…”there are a lot of non-politicians who’ve never done anything this stupid!” get someone who has integrity and honesty –> vote this bum out

Resign you dirt bag and take Charlie Rangel with you….you dems are a joke

  6. Billy M. says:

DONE AND DUSTED. Your finished Weiner. This “confession” was too little, too late. The only “regrettable” thing you feel about the whole sorry episode is that you got caught in a BIG LIE. If you would have fessed up the day after, most NY’ers would have probably forgiven you and would have moved on. The fact that your own Wife did not stand next to you during this tearful spectacle also says alot; looks like she’s done with you too!
Na Na Na Na……….Na Na Na Na….hey hey hey…………GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. changomango says:

He’s a Democrat, they don;’t care, liberals don’t care. His lies are like a badge of honor to them. MSNBC is still making excuses for him.

      1. exfedagent says:

Ab-So-LUTELY! The liberal MSM will ignore this, downplay it, sweep it under the rug, change the subject, change the topic, claim it’s normal, etc. etc.etc. so the amount of negative press The Weiner gets is minimized. (Whereas the amount of negative press the Republicans get is maximized.)

  7. Douglas Morosoff says:

@Ellen..that is the STUPIDEST comment I have read to date..He is a LIAR, a PERVERT and UNFAITHFUL to his wife and yet….you make all levels of appologies for madam are a DISGRACE!!!

We haven’t had a wiener for pres. since Clinton. Obamma is a clam.

  9. Rich Pope says:

It isn’t breaking the law that is so upsetting, it’s the fact that Anthony Weiner openly lied about it. This is why he should resign. He cannot be trusted in the future.

  10. mr burns says:

when there is no other choice tell the truth . The man is a lying weasel and is acting contrite and sorrowful because that is the only way left for him to keep his phoney-baloney job. He is amrried to a beuatiful woman who he loves very much, so much that he has phone and twitter sex with complete strangers . He works so har that he thinks about and contacts these same women from his office. Everything this guy says is a lie, his judgement is clearly non-existant and anyone who believes a word he says is a fool .

  11. John says:

Lamby your a schmuck.Click and Clack can’t save this tool from the jokes he is going to hear. The fact that he didn’t resign is a testament to the double standard that applies to you sorry a** people. You are a candidate for a big punch in the mouth. Some people just need a punch in the mouth and I think you are one. Sometimes a punch in the mouth helps to get you on the right track in life. Consider it therapy.

    1. New Lamby says:

You reply is so brain less that it is pathetic. Sounds like you’ve received that therapy too many times. Try in the future to stick to the facts. Most if not all politicians have done stupid things. Have you. Let the one who is sin less to walk before us.

Sounds like a red neck as yourself would be in the back of the line getting punched.

I guess he didn’t have time to wax….

  13. astralweeks says:

Oh please, it’ll just add to his sleazeability, which is a big plus for Democrats.

  14. Fanny Forbes Franklen says:

Just another degenerate government stooge being paid by the forcible extraction of your wealth through taxation. These are not rock stars that do this on their own money that is gained through voluntary association. Don’t pay this guy’s salary and people in blue costumes with guns show up at your door.

  15. el polacko says:

his actions were sleazy but not illegal (although he admits that he had no idea how old any of the women he sent pics to were) but this CONGRESSMAN LIED to every media outlet and insinuated that devious forces were working against him. he claimed that his computer was HACKED all the while knowing that no such thing had happened. if he had a shred of dignity, he would resign.

    1. Carl Z. says:

There’s the magic word: DIGNITY! He has none, but he learned it all from Charles “Dagger to the Heart” Schumer.

    2. LJ84 says:

Not only did this despicable little man lie about he got nasty about it with those who dared to question him about it.

He is not fit to clean up dog poop in the park.

  16. Lillie says:

He’s worse than Bill Clinton, I never had sexual relations with that woman !
He lied with a straight face, what man can’t! He should be ashamed of himself, what’s the matter with men ? Damn, why can’t they either be happy with who they have at home, find a new love or “take matters into their own hands”.
Who can be trusted, police are out of the question, politicians are out and everyday Joes’.

    1. Carl Z. says:

Many believe that what Bill Clinton said was:
“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”

It was a personal message to Monica about Hillary said over the airwaves.

      Bada Boom!

    2. Rick says:

I’m a man who has been faithful to my wife of 25 years. Let’s not suck “all men” into this goon’s disgusting behavior. Thanks.

    3. ironman - atlanta says:

I feel sorry for the whole family, and what this guy has done.

Before you condemn every man, I love my wife, have never been unfaithful, am raising my 5 kids, and she just recovered from cancer. Not everyone is Anthony Weiner.

    4. GRobert Waldman says:

What’s the matter with you, Lillie? Got something against men?

  17. Tim says:

Good grace? I’d hate to see what you call bad grace. He called someone a jack*ss on national network news. Plus he’s a smug blowhard getting exactly what he deserves. I say keep pushing, he’s hiding much more.

His name fits him well, he’s a little pud.

  18. Dustin says:

Can you be more of a Liberal troll. You back him up after all of this, you are sad

  19. Pundit says:

How can you believe anything this man would say or do? There are far too many liars in public office already. If we want good government, we need honest representatives.

  20. WeinerMobile says:

    Can’t be a liberal and NOT be a hypocrite…..

    1. WeinerMobile says:

Oh, and yes, he SHOULD resign.. that’s the least he can do, cause he’s going to need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just to try and smooth this over with his family, if they’re still with him after this totally moronic episode…

    2. gman says:

Yeah, like Mark Foley or Larry Craig or Ted Haggard or Randy Hopper or Bob Packwood? Yeah, the Dems have the whole sex thing on lockdown. Straight sex, I should say.

  21. Edmund Singleton says:

During Judge Judy you ran a news crawl on the Weiner story, then you interrupted her show with a live news conference. One would beleive that this story was a matter of life or death and the public needed to know about it reight away. I could have waited until the 11p news broadcast for this little of no interest information. Again, the situation is not of an urgent matter.

    1. Tim says:

Right, it’s only a matter of importance if it’s a Republican that cheats on his wife.

    2. Carl Z. says:

He’s the US Representative of over 500,000 people (some of whom are actual voting non-citizens) of Kings County and Queens County, NY. It IS news!

      1. Jeff in Sherwood says:

That is the problem there… How can one person accurately represent 716,075 people (311,493,000/435)? Bring it back to 1/30,000. Then 15,001 people can throw a bum out. Plus, you’ll actually know your representative, rather than being a blip on a voting roll.

      2. exfedagent says:

No it’s not Carl. These bozos will reelect The Weiner in 2012. Nothing to see here, move along, move along………

    3. aussiegirl says:

This guy is making lawa for our contry – I think his judgement is questionable to say the least. He behaved poorly, recklessly, dishonestly and shamefully. It IS BIG news and he should at least show he has some respect for the office he holds to resign … but I won’t hold my breath ….

    4. My Name says:

Good grief and judge judy is THAT relevant that you can’t do without seeing the end of her show?

  22. ew-3 says:

Sad part is the media will still bring him on Sunday morning talk shows so he can spout his vitriol. But they will likely never ask him about this event.

  23. Dustin says:

    Are you f’ing kidding me

  24. Jon Weiss says:

Since he made a false police report about internet hacking will he be prosecuted, ot with there be the standard left wing coverup?

    1. potvin says:

      Exactly frickin right!

    2. LJ84 says:

He never made an official report with the police which was a big reason to doubt his story from the very start. All of his false accusations of hacking were made in the media not to law enforcement.

He’s a nasty arrogant little man.

    3. Jeff in Sherwood says:

He never made a police report. That was why the story got bigger (no pun intended).

      1. exfedagent says:

        Yea Jeff!!!!

  25. matt says:

    of course he won’t resign.
    he’s a democrat.

      1. Mike says:

God help this country. We are on a brink of a depression and we defunctional idiots running the show.

  26. Mary Easterly says:

    The Headline reads:

    Weiner Shows His Wiener!

  27. TDW says:

Sincere? Seriously not! He did the same thing as most other politicians in his position – he tried to lie and cover it up. If he was truly sincere, he would not have lied about being hacked, he would not have let the story go on so long, and he wouldn’t have been the usual jerk he is.

  28. Moonbat says:

    /tinfoil hat.

  29. Drew says:

This is a disgusting and vile comment from a total moron.

  30. Deb says:

So, he’s also a liar! If he is unable to honor his commitment to his wife, then how can we trust him to honor his commitment to America? What a dishonorable Weiner

  31. Ron says:

Don’t criticize Weiner too much—he might hold “it” against you!

    1. Peter Tweeter says:

This guy tweeted a thousand something pictures. Check out the Montage, LOL!

  32. nobama says:

    what a fool.

  33. Jake says:

    What flavor is that kool-aid?

  34. cp123456 says:

Chris Lee resigned, Anthony Wiener doesn’t, What’s the difference?

    1. shane says:

Weiner’s is worse because he certainly drug it out and lied for longer.

But Lee’s is worse because he was specifically trying to meet local women for sex. To the best of the evidence that’s surfaced, Weiner’s portrayal as having long term online “friendships” with these women (for years) and never meeting them is truthful. I’m sure Breitbart would let us know if it wasn’t!

Weigh that how you’d like but I do think that it’s more dangerous and unacceptable for a congressmen to be meeting local women for extramartial sex.

  35. Madison Jones says:

like, he is like TOTALLY HAWT – OMG!!!!!

leave him ALONE NEOCONS! Bush II made him do it!!!!!!

he has an epic bod! XOXOXOXOXO

    1. Ashley Madison says:

We will forgive him but I bet his wife wont which is fine by use because he is totally hot meow.

      1. Tim says:

Glad I don’t know you.. You find repugnant and repulsive personalities hot.

    2. Bobby says:

You must be one stupid person. Arnold Horshack is not hot. He’s a freak. You’re right in one aspect, Bush did go over to Weiners house, hacked into his CPU and sent the pics. Laura talked him into it. GET A LIFE YOU LOSER.

  36. el polacko says:

how is it a conspiracy ?? did you listen to the man ? he says he did it (and more) and lied to everyone about it, he apologized to breitbart, so what the heck ar you talking about ?!

  37. Carl Z. says:

Remember the rule: Democrats don’t have to resign or even be ashamed of their weird behavior. It’s a resume enhancer!

    1. Roger says:

Did the Republican senator from Louisiana resign after being caught calling prostitutes from the senate floor? No.

How about the Republican senator that was arrested for soliciting sex in an airport bathroom? No.

Talk about having no shame, that covers both parties.

  38. potvin says:

    Resign you lying bum!

  39. Ellen says:

That’s horrible. Talk about ignorance and one hell of a racist attitude, and by the way I’m Irish Catholic.

    1. shoehorn says:

Ellen, what’s with the “racist” charge with you? Why is everything “racist” with the left? And by the way, as a Catholic I want to know what gives you any sort of special authority on this matter by claiming you are an “Irish Catholic”. My God and my Church do not condone lying and this sort of sexual deviance. Nor does yours. So quit using your religion as an excuse for Weiner’s behavior.

  40. JD says:

More pictures of men acting stupid.

    1. jose says:

I thought it was a picture of Hillery.

  41. Ziggy says:

You think his wife, of one year, will divorce him?

    1. Carl Z. says:

Shhhh… He’s her cover husband so she can continue her affair with Hillary. But don’t tell anybody…

  42. Hizzoo says:

    Career OVER…

    1. lance says:

Probably not. As Rush always correctly points out: a sex scandal usually advances a democrat’s career

      1. exfedagent says:

Get rid of Ashton Cutcher immediately and replace him with The Weiner on “Two and a Half Men” and rename the show “Two and a Half Weiners”!!!

  43. me says:

    who cares

  44. weegmc says:

What a buffoon. You knew more was coming with the ‘certitude’ comment. I liked Wieiner but this will bury him, and well it should. Incredibly poor lack of judgment.

  45. See Ya says:

in just one week both your career and marriage – over with. So easy even cave man can do it.

  46. Ziggy says:

    A victim of Hubris again!

  47. P.I. says:

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner…..ANYTHING BUT Weiner An-Tho-NY!!!

    1. Tina says:

      Comment of the day…kudos!!

    2. Roth says:

  48. Ellen says:

Look this is a no nothing deal. I’m from the Boston area and if you want scandal then come over here. Like Barney Frank and his pranks have cost us more then anything Weiner has done. And these stupid voters from Frank’s district still voted the nit wit back in again. Now that’s something to really get up set about.

    1. Gerri says:

I agree — ONLY IF he is a republican must he resign. If the pervert is a Democrat, his career can grow.

      1. Mitchy Mitch says:

If he grows anymore, we’ll have to go to a wide-shot.

      2. Mike says:

        @Mitchy… rimshot! +1

    2. Bruce says:

Right. Why should something as silly as character matter in our politicians? We definitely have the government we deserve. Welcome to the world of zero accountability.

    3. KFran says:

ummm… are you serious? This is a bit beyond the normal mistakes made by your average person. But heck, if you think a sincere apology makes up for his behavior and the blatant lying after the fact, then you are probably far too hopelessly lost to reasonably talk to.

    4. JKDRAWDE says:

I bet Frank was excited to check his Twitter account the past few days.

    5. Justthefacts says:

Ellen: The only and I mean the only reason he came forward is because he got caught red handed or should I say, exposed. And, please, don’t justify his actions with that, “Everybody does it” BS. You’re excusing him because you agree with his politics, nothing more. Thanks for you selective moral opinion…

    6. Jack says:

Barney’s salivating thinking about enjoying this Weiner…

    7. jlburdge says:

Ellen: Aparently you feel that this should stay a “personal” matter concerning Mr. Weiner. Did it ever occur to you that Mr.Weiner is privy to many national security secrets and to have this “personal” behaviour hidden amone a few, he is open to blackmail ? I don’t want my congressman making vote decisions because he wants to hide a “Personal” thingy……..Get real, what a sitting congressman does in private IS OUR BUSINESS, AND IS A BIG DEAL, especially when it is something being lied about and effort is being made to hide it. AND by the way, Blithering Barney sucks, and so do those who would vote for the *^#@*%

    8. Mitchy Mitch says:

This is guy is a fool. Doesn’t matter who’s done it before or what Barney is doing and has done…this guy is a pig. He made a mistake – and one you or I could not make and keep OUR jobs. Why should this be any different? This is a guy who spends a good part of his day thinking below his belt; he’s focused on it. And that is NOT the guy that should be in public office. It’s too bad, but he chose a profession that requires a different type of person. Some guys cannot control their emotions and their actions. Some of us can. We all fail but unfortunately for some, if you are an elected official, (or a cop, or a preacher, or a principal) you’re held to a higher standard than the rest of us. His DNA is mismatched; he should have been a seedy filmstar.
