Bronx Teen Girl Shot In The Hip While Leaving School

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 16-year-old Bronx student was shot Wednesday afternoon as she left school to catch the bus.

Authorities said the teen had just left the Soundview Educational Complex at the corner of Story and Colgate avenues when a gunman stepped off the bus and opened fire at a crowd.

The student was hit in her right hip and was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where she was in stable condition on Wednesday night.

Liz Negron told 1010 WINS' Al Jones she was "born and raised" on the block, adding she doesn't "understand how it changed so much."

"This block was just getting really ridiculous -- lot of drive-bys, lot of shootings, lot of drugs," she said. "It's like, I don't even let my daughter go outside [or] come to the store."

Police are still looking for the suspect who shot the student from the Institute for Law and Public Policy. They hope surveillance video from a nearby bodega will help lead to an arrest.
