Body Of Man Who Saved Stepson Recovered Near L.I. Beach

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The body of a man who went missing after rescuing a child from Long Island Sound has been recovered near a beach.

Authorities said 35-year-old Edwin Barahona's body was found near the Wading River beach early Saturday morning.

Riverhead police said the Bellport man went into the water to help the boy, who was swimming in the sound on Friday night. After helping the child, police say Barahona was last seen in chest-deep water, then slipped under the surface.

Witnesses on shore helped the child out of the water.

First responders searched through the night for Barahona's body, to no avail. His body was discovered the next morning.
