Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano Plans To Cut 130 Workers

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano says he will lay off 130 municipal employees and redeploy 160 members of the police department. The cuts would go into effect July 1.

Nassau County has one of the highest tax rates in the country. It was placed under a state fiscal watchdog earlier this year after officials determined the county budget was $176 million in the red.

Mangano says the cuts will bring staffing in the county to the lowest level since the 1950s. Police officers also will be moved from office assignments back to the street.

Mangano said these moves will save the county $32 million in this year's budget.

The Civil Service Employees Union says workers have agreed to contract givebacks for years and says worker morale is at an all-time low.
