7 Wounded, 1 Dead After Shooting At Brooklyn House Party

BROOKLYN, NY (CBSNewYork) -- A semi-automatic handgun was just one of the weapons police believe was involved in a wild shooting spree in East New York Brooklyn that left seven people injured and one man dead.

Police say the shooting began at a crowded house party on Wyona Street around 3:15 a.m. Saturday and then spilled out into the street.

A 20-year-old man, identified by police as Donzell Rogers, was shot in the chest and died of his injuries.

According to police, most of the partygoers were in their teens or early 20s. The party was advertised on Facebook and on flyers around the neighborhood as "Freaky Friday" and had a $5 cover charge.

Police believe it all started when two people who were already in some sort of fight bumped into each other. That's when the two began to argue and then the shooting broke out.

When police arrived on scene, there were several people lying injured in the street, and even more lying shot inside the house.

Police say two guns have been found: one tossed in the grass, and the other on a person who was stopped by officers.

This entire incident appalling to New York City Councilman Charles Barron.

"Most of the police say they haven't seen this in their professional careers," he said. "We are pleading to our communities, stop the violence, put down the guns. Men and women settle their conflicts with their minds, not with weapons and violence. That's the message we want to get out."

Saturday morning, police were still collecting evidence at the scene with reports of bullet holes and shell casings all over the house, yard and down the block.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says police believe the shooting was gang related. Three people are currently being questioned and charges are pending. Police say one of them was arrested as he fled the scene with a loaded semi-automatic gun.

Cops still don't know who the shooters were or how many. It's also unclear how many people were at the party. The party's organizers were trying to raise money for rent but it's uncertain if they knew the people who opened fire.

At least nine people were injured and were taken to area hospitals. Of those victims, a 20-year-old man, was killed. Police said five victims were in stable condition while three were treated and released.
