NEW YORK (WFAN) — The Major League Baseball trading deadline is a little over five weeks away. The Mets are just two games under .500 and five games behind in the wild card race.

With the cash-strapped franchise still battling a $1 billion lawsuit from the trustee trying to recover money for the victims of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon surprisingly told the New York Post that general manager Sandy Alderson may get the green light to add — yes, add — players for a stretch run.

“He’ll have all the opportunity in the world to bring anybody he wants in,” Wilpon told the paper on Monday. “The way for him to do that is to bring the ideas to us and we’ll talk about it. But he does not have restrictions. We’ll deal with everything on a case-by-case basis.”

But for the Mets to be buyers at the July 31 deadline, they’ll have to remain in the thick of things in the National League.

“The next three to four weeks will tell a lot,” Alderson said.

Jose Reyes has been bandied about as a probable chip to trade for cheap prospects. But Wilpon hasn’t lost hope that the team will be able to re-sign Reyes after this season.

“Why would we (lose hope)?” he said. “There’s a long time between now and next year … a lot of things that can happen in a lot of different directions.”

He added: “Sandy and I have had conversations about all the different scenarios that could happen with Jose.”

Alderson will surely be fielding calls from teams looking to land Carlos Beltran. The outfielder, finally healthy, is just trying to keep his focus on the field.

“I can control what I have control over,” Beltran said, according to the paper. “All I know is that now I feel good physically playing the game and I’m doing OK. For me, that’s the most important thing.”

The Mets know they have to step up if the Wilpons really are willing to stretch their budget for a playoff run.

“We feel like we want (Beltran) around so we can make the playoffs,” said Angel Pagan. “It would be tough without him or Jose. But we all know it’s a business, so now we have to take care of our own business.”

This is yet another example of despicable, whining, Mets hating Mets fans. Just sickening. These people complain that the sky is blue. What a disgrace.

so true…everyone is so mad at wilpon, why? the guy has spent a ton of money in the past yes some bad moves.. If we can get past the next 3 weeks and still come out with our head above water….July 10th is the day we will know then… then we should be getting ike and wright back then who knows…

my guess here is Santa4real & LongTimeFan believe in fairy tales and the Easter Bunny

The Mets may be getting Ike & Wright back, but that does not mean they will both be 100% healthy & Reyes, Beltran & K-Rod will still be part of the team.

        It’s called addition by subtraction

      keep drinking that kool aid

This is the biggest joke of an article I have ever seen. Wonder how much the journalist got paid to print this garbage. This is a total PR stunt on the Mets part. Mind you this is coming from a die-hard Mets fan. Lets be real, this teams payroll will be 100 million or even less next year. They just mortgaged the team to keep their heads above water. Beltran is as good as on another team right now, K-Rod will be traded to a team that needs a set-up man and Reyes well the sad truth is he is auditioning right now thats all. Just the reality sorry Mets fans we have rough years ahead

  3. Ronnesb says:

Their time to make a move was the offseason last year. It should be illegal for these guys to continue to be allowed to own this team. They sat around with Minaya and Manuel for 7 years and watched the franchise tank year after year. Too little too late – no good players WANT to play for the Mets, just like no good NBA players want to come play for Dantoni and Dolan’s Knicks. I’m sure they’re telling their agents already the Mets are a no-go for deals.

  4. Carl says:

Seriously??? This team has ZERO chance at making the playoffs! SELL!!!!!

  5. Eric Soley says:

Buyers! If they trade Reyes or Beltran, thats a big mistake!

  6. Kevin says:

There’s a left handed smoke shifter I’d like to sell.
    Wilpons are buffoons…

  7. Big Bear says:

LIES, LIES, LIES, this is just the Wilpons wanting Mets fans to buy tickets when in reality they’re not doing anything to improve the team.

These are the same people who lied about the players actual injuries so fans could continue to believe the players were coming back in order to sell tickets when they knew from the get go the players were not returning that fast.

This is propaganda; don’t believe in this Mets fans, in the end, the Mets will be sellers.

    1. FreddytheLeper says:

Exactly Big Bear. Wilpons need to sell the team and get out completely. They are destroying a team with talent.

    2. Matthew Urso says:

agreed…. you’re telling me they’re gonna keep beltran and Krod (and reyes) and make a run for the playoffs if they are at 500? and risk getting nothing back, or having to pay krod of he makes his save quota? don’t see it. and on top of that they are gonna ADD players?
