NEWARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) — The violent shooting death of 13-year-old Dante Young Sunday night in Newark has prompted officials to take extra measures to protect residents in the area.

Acting police director Samuel DeMaio said they do have leads in Young’s murder but would not comment further since the investigation is ongoing.

DeMaio says while the city is stepping up curfew enforcement this summer, they’re also trying to lead kids to constructive activities.

“Maybe it’s a mentoring issue that is needed with the parent, the child, and a pastor all together. Maybe it’s showing the parents what’s available to their children, what we can offer,” says DeMaio.

He says the city will roll out a list of things to do in a few days, even talking of shifting city pools hours to be open later in the evening.

“Any little thing can directly help us,” says DeMaio.

“[In the past month], the ages of our victims of homicides here in Essex [County] have ranged from 8-years-old to 88-years old,” says acting prosecutor Carolyn Murray.

Murray says they are forming a permanent homicide major crimes task force with 29 officers from departments within the county.

“So as to give out best to the victims,” she says.

“We are going after the baddest of the bad,” says sheriff Armando Fontoura.

Christie needs to call in the National Guard and impose a dusk to dawn curfew for everyone.

I have written it before and nobody seems to respond. What needs to be done is for police to randomly search people (all races, genders, and ages except for very young and old) in high-crime areas. Any contraband found confiscated, but NO FURTHER ACTION taken against such person unless they resist. Someone please tell me why this won’t decrease street crime more than a curfew.

Because it goes against EVERYTHING our country stands for!

You want to live in a state where the police just stop and search EVERYONE?

Simple Solution: Round up all the coloreds and put them on a spaceship to Pluto.

    1. Onslow says:

Bill, we don’t have a space vessel that can safely make it to Pluto. We have not had a manned space vessel make it past the moon yet. Hopefully one day we’ll make it to Mars, but even that is quite a ways off.

Therefore, I find your solution impractical.

p.s. I don’t think African Americans appreciate being called “colored”.
