71-Year-Old Bryon Sheffield Also Has Funeral Today

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – As David Laffer, accused of murdering four people in cold blood at the Haven Drugs pharmacy in Medford, sits behind bars Friday, the family and friends of one of his alleged victims say farewell to 17-year-old Jennifer Mejia.

With heavy hearts, friends and some family carried the white casket with rose gold trim holding Mejia’s body into Our Lady Of Mount Carmel in Patchogue.

Following close behind were her mother and father, both dressed in black, with their arms around each other.

Mejia’s father had one wish fulfilled Friday – for his daughter’s class of 2011 to show up in their caps and gowns.

Thursday night, Mejia was remembered at the Bellport High graduation ceremony. Tributes to her were everywhere: on the stage, in the program. Balloons were released to honor her.

Mejia was meant to graduate with her class Thursday. Instead, her parents received her diploma, which was placed beside her casket at a funeral home.

Many of the students at Mejia’s funeral were wearing bracelets that were made by classmates in memory of the 17-year-old. The bracelets were sold at the graduation and proceeds from the sale will be going to Mejia’s family.

“She really brought us all together,” said one student.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports: Medford Pharmacy Massacre Victims Being Laid To Rest

She’ll be buried today in a blue prom dress that she never got the chance to wear.

Bryon Sheffield, 71, is also being buried today in Patchogue.

Sheffield was a customer at the pharmacy. Police have said Sheffield and fellow customer Jaime Taccetta didn’t know what hit them. Laffer allegedly stood near the doorway as they entered and shot them as they walked in, execution-style.

Sheffield leaves behind a wife of 50 years and five grandchildren. Friends and family say he loved to fish, play video games and kid around with his friends.

The funerals for the other two victims – pharmacist Raymond Ferguson and Jamie Taccetta, a single mother of two daughters, will be held Saturday. Taccetta, who was engaged, will be buried in her wedding dress.

Jennifer may you rest in Peace. I don’t even know you but, I am touched by this… I feel bad for your parents… for 17 years they did all what they could for you to have a good education and graduate from high school.. I know what they are going through …. no one wishes to go through this ordeal and sad time.. My son just graduated last week and I know the joy you were to fill in their lives.. May you rest in peace.. Jennifer you are in a better place.. a Place where you will be with Jesus and Mary… May the Kingdom of Paradise be wide open for you. A loving mother.. I can’t even stop my tears…. May you rest in Peace..Amen

Every time a read about this sad story, I start crying. Eventhough I did not know the victims or their family. I cannot not imagine the sadness and emptyness of them all. May the victims of this hedious crime rest in pease in Heaven. May the perpetrators, these piece of human garbage and waste of space rot in jail. They deserve to dye exactly the same way he killed his victims, execution stye. But I think a better punishment would be to let them rot in jail, suffer from drug withdrawal and pain. Total solitary confinement, with no human interaction.

Watching this tragedy unfold these past several days on television,I broke down and cried like a baby.Even though I did not personally know these four innocent victims, I was so broken up by this senseless act of violence.May all four of them rest in peace, and may God grant their grieving families and friends peace also.As for those 2 so called human beings,-he should be given the death penalty, and she should spend a very long time in prison.

  7. Millie Puydak says:

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. May they rest in peace in God’s eternal home.

As for the monsters – let them both rot in jail. I will be happy to lock the cell doors and throw the keys away. When they go through the drug withdrawals let them suffer. No matter how they beg for the drugs the answer is NO.

I wonder what this killers service record was like in the Army. Some men are just born to kill ..The media is to stupid to look into it

There are not many stories that make me want to bawl like a baby, but this one did. I have no other words to express my feelings. My heart and thoughts go out to all of the families of the victims.

  12. Gregory says:

How did an psychopathic drug addict get a pistol license? Why didn’t his doctor report him as a risk to the county health department?…… ????

God rest and comfort these families. May justice in whatever form be promptly done.

  14. Bob says:

Here in Florida, Laffer would get the death penalty. Well deserved.

    1. danny says:

Death is way to easy. Life in solitary so he can truly go insane is a much better fate. I’d be more than happy to pay a bit more in taxes knowing this monster would suffer for a loooon time. Cruel? Yes. Fitting? Absolutely!!

      1. Michael H. says:

studies have shown that life in prison is actually cheaper than seeking the death penalty. it’s cheaper to house a criminal for life than it is to fight all the appeals and whatnot when seeking the death penalty.

  15. Stevis says:

may they all rest in eternal peace

  16. mike - ups man for medford says:

  17. Judith Molina says:

My prayers go out to all the families. This is just so horrible to have occurred. I feel very sad about it. Some people in our society have just crossed the line towards brutal insanity. Something massive needs to be done quickly because too many innocent lambs are being raped, tortured and slaughtered.

    1. purnellmeagrejr says:

Calm down – the world is no different today than it was last year or 20 years ago. Humans are and have always been an unstable, unpredictable breed. All you can do is find peace in your own being.

      1. Jay says:

        well said.
