LI Robbery Suspects Involved In Deadly Crash After Evading Suffolk County Police

SAYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two cars were ripped apart Monday after a horrific crash that followed a police chase on Long Island.

After a seven-mile pursuit, Suffolk County deputy sheriffs pulled over a black Lincoln Town Car, carrying passengers suspected in connection with a robbery at the Tanger Outlets in Riverhead. When the officers got out of their car, the three suspects sped off.

A few minutes later, the Town Car smashed into a silver Subaru on Sunrise Highway Service Road in Sayville.  A female passenger was killed and her husband, who was driving the vehicle, was injured.

The victim's name has not been released. Her 61-year-old husband suffered a punctured lung.

"My sister-in-law come to see us today and on their way here, they got into that traffic and they had to detour and come around," one man told CBS 2's Emily Smith.

Local residents lamented that such tragedies could happen at any time.

"It could've been anybody. If I didn't stop for coffee, it could've been me," one man said.

"We don't realize the things that go on every day, how you could just be at one corner and then you're here today and gone tomorrow," another man said.

None of the passengers in the Lincoln Town Car suffered life-threatening injuries. The female suspect driving the alleged getaway car was taken into custody.

Police were pursuing the Lincoln with lights and sirens, but were nowhere near the scene of the accident.
