State Police Urging Boaters To Be Safe On The Water

JERSEY SHORE (WCBS 880) -- For all the boaters heading out this weekend, be careful. Extra marine patrols are out on the water.

With the boating season now in full gear this holiday weekend, New Jersey State Police Marine Services Captain Dennis Tully reminds boaters to stay safe on the water.

"As we all know, there are no lane lines, no painted lines, no traffic control devices. But there are rules and those rules have to be followed," said Tully.

He says in many ways, operating a vessel can be tricky and says boaters should drink non-alcoholic fluids and eat.

"One of the most dangerous violations, like driving on the road, is driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs," said Tully.

He says pack a cell phone and let someone know where you're going. "It's also about being prepared before you leave the dock or leave land," he said.

Tully also says to make sure you check the weather before heading out and have enough floatation devices for everyone on board.
