Hempstead Police Investigating Firecracker Incident That Injured 6

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police on Long Island are trying to find out who threw a firecracker into a school classroom Tuesday morning causing minor injuries to multiple people.

Authorities said the incident happened around 11 a.m. at the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead while students were registering for summer classes.

Police said six people suffered bumps and bruises trying to flee.

"The injuries range from some sort of burns to the arm and the face of one individual. Other people that were injured have bruises and one woman, I'm told, several months pregnant and she's experiencing abdominal pain," Hempstead Police Chief Joseph Wing told reporters, including 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.

Wing said that it is still unclear what type of device was used, but said officials were taking the incident very seriously.

"We are investigating it and we are going to charge the highest count that we can. Anytime somebody throws some sort of explosive device into a crowded room, we have to take that seriously," he said.
