With New York Rangers jerseys down to their knees and massive hockey helmets on, about 40 at-risk kids from Brooklyn took to the ice Wednesday at the Madison Square Garden training center in Tarrytown to learn how to skate.
For 11-year-old Elise, it was her first time on the ice.
"It's kind of scary, but when you get used to it, it's gonna be fun," Elise told WCBS 880 reporter Catherine Cioffi.
Felicia, 9, was determined to get it right.
"I think that ice skating is fun, but also tricky," she said.
"Your feet just glide," 9-year-old Alia said.
The kids have great teachers, like Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert.
"If you don't try it, you never know if you like it," he said.
His number one tip: bend your knees.
Current New York Rangers player Ruslan Fedotenko is glad these kids are having the experience, saying, "Some of them could be in [the] NHL playing for the Rangers. Who knows? So, it's great."
The event was held to open the Garden of Dreams Foundation's summer camp.
