Nurse Rescues Child Who Nearly Drowns At Staten Island Pool

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A quick-thinking nurse is credited with helping lifeguards save an 11-year-old boy who nearly drowned at a Staten Island pool.

Pamela Glennon dashed over to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when she saw lifeguards starting emergency procedures on Wednesday night at the South Shore YMCA in Eltingville.

"They don't know how long he was under water for but he'd been unconscious, he was completely blue, unresponsive, so we immediately started CPR," Glennon told 1010 WINS.

The boy was "responsive and breathing on his own" by the time paramedics arrived.

"Finally, after however many breaths and compressions, he eventually coughed and his color came immediately back and he started to breathe on his own," Glennon said.

Glennon's proud fiance, Ryan Murphy, tells the Advance that he won't go swimming in the future without his "superhero" by his side.
