Yankees' Ramiro Pena On DL After Appendectomy; Brandon Laird Called Up

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- Yankees infielder Ramiro Pena had an appendectomy on Monday was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

"This morning I got a call that he was having bad stomach pains," New York manager Joe Girardi said before Monday night's 5-4 win over Tampa Bay. "Unfortunately on his (26th) birthday. It will be a birthday I'm sure he'll never forget."

Girardi has no timetable for when Pena will return, but doesn't expect him to miss an extended period.

Infielder Brandon Laird was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

"Good for him," Trenton Thunder manager Tony Franklin told the Star-Ledger. "Great for him. He certainly had a great season here. ... That was one of those once-in-a-lifetime seasons that I never had. He certainly played great last year. I am always happy to see one of the youngsters get an opportunity to go to the big leagues and perform. Hopefully, he will get the chance to play and do well."

Also, Girardi said reliever Rafael Soriano (right elbow inflammation) and infielder Eric Chavez (broken left foot) are scheduled to start minor league rehab assignments Tuesday night with Class-A Tampa.

"Those are both good news," Girardi said.
