'Smurfs' Paint New York City Blue For Release Of New Movie

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The fun, loveable and tiny Smurfs are painting the town blue as they kick off "Smurfs Week" in New York City.

"The Smurfs know how to have a 'smurfy' time in the Big Apple," NYC & Co.'s George Fertitta said.

The Empire State Building will go blue for "Smurfs Week" and Columbus Circle has been transformed into a "Smurf Village" with mushroom-shaped houses and a 40-foot tall inflatable blue creature.

Families can experience more than a dozen Smurfs events at locations throughout the city like the Brooklyn Children's Museum, The Skyscraper Museum in Lower Manhattan, Dylan's Candy Bar, The Museum Of Comic and Cartoon Art and the New York Botanical Garden.

 Fans in Staten Island and Queens will not be treated to any events in their boroughs.

Katy Perry, Neil Patrick Harris and Sofia Vergara were among the stars in attendance at "The Smurfs" world premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre Sunday.
