NEW YORK (WFAN) — Mets manager Terry Collins has a message for his team: if Carlos Beltran is traded and you quit on 2011, you’re outta here!

“You’re going to hear guys say, ‘The front office is giving up on us,'” Collins said on Monday. “Or ‘We don’t have a chance now’ or ‘We didn’t get much for him,.”

Collins is aware of the chatter in the papers and on sports talk radio, but he doesn’t want the negativity creeping into his locker room.

Consider it a warning.

“We’ve got guys that are playing for jobs,” said Collins. “The minute they give up or quit, they won’t be here next year.”

Apparently, starter Mike Pelfrey didn’t get the memo in time.

“I understand that if you want to get something back for him you have to trade him,” Pelfrey told the New York Post before the Mets’ 4-2 win — and prior to Collins’ comments. “In the same sense I would think if we ended up getting rid of him, the front office’s view is that we don’t have a chance, because he gives us our best chance to win. If he’s not here, then they felt we can’t rebound from where we’re at.”

Beltran, who likely has played his last game as a Met at Citi Field, has been rumored to land with the Red Sox, Phillies, Giants, Braves or Rangers. Collins, a fiery old-schooler, doesn’t buy into the woe-is-me talk.

The Mets are at .500, 7.5 games out of the wild card.

“The first thing that I have to do is see how they react to it,” he said. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions that they’re not going to be able to deal with it. I want to see how they react to the situation, what the mood in the clubhouse will be, what the conversations will be about. And then have a feel for that, and if it’s stuff that I don’t like, or need to address, it will be addressed immediately.”

So how much are they getting paid again to play baseball, yet they are all complaining? GIVE ME A BREAK!! TYPICAL JOCK-ATTITUDE.

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from,

I’m not sure that the Mets should trade Beltran away. Who are they going to replace him with? Perhaps if they were to offer him 5 years @ $60 million ($14, 13, 12, 11, 10/year to reflect his lessening skills), he might rather want to stay where he is, and probably be in a place to contend within 2 years? A front line pitcher, and a smack to Pelfry’s head to wake him up, and they should be ok, barring injury, next year.

  4. Bell Toller says:

Why are the Mets constanty trading or releasing hispanic players?

Is seems like its becoming racial.

    1. Bob Fowler says:

It is probably just as racially motivated as it was when all they were signing were Hispanic players (Del Gado, Perez, Castillo…). That didn’t really work out that well for them, now did it?

By the way, since they spent years signing primarily Hispanic players, who do you think they have available to trade/release? They have more of them to trade, so should they keep them because they are Hispanic, even if they aren’t best for the team?

  5. MCK says:

What he’s really saying is that the Mets suck either way but they’ll really suck when Carlos is gone! Maybe they can trade him to St. Louis and he can finally get that bat off his shoulder!

  6. lydia says:

ook at J. Bay, he definitly wouldnot be around or at least he wouldn’t be playing if he wasn’t giving his all. Giving your all in anything should be the norm in anything any of us do.

  7. Jerry says:

LOVE his atitude!!!! LOVE IT!!!!! Manuel would have just moped around. Collins for manager of the year!!!! Well almost:)

  8. Ashlee says:

Pelfrey should keep his mouth closed and concentrate on pitching better. I’m sick of watching this guy fold like a house of cards. He works off his fastball and garbage splitter that no one swings at. He is what he is at this point, a mediocre back end starter that’s getting expensive in his arbitration years. Send him to KC for a Jugs machine and a PTBNL, I want him gone.

  9. Alva Collins says:

Pelfrey should be tried in the bull pen. He may turn out to be another Izzy.
    If not good buy

  10. scorp says:

How’s about Pelfrey start pitching some qualtity starts before opening his mouth always stinking and licking up the place, I’m tired of this goon already.

  11. Anthony says:

What he really is saying is without Beltran we will SUCK and get use to it because it will be worst next year, but keep your heads up. .

  12. 86mets says:

Absolutely taking the right approach. He’s going to take care of the problem before it becomes a problem, which is refreshing. If this were last year Jerry Manuel would’ve let them grumble and complain then tried to soothe things over with some jokes and cliches. Go get ’em Terry!

  13. Max says:

    Collins is a genius.

  14. John Y says:

He is absolutely doing the right thing.

  15. Ian says:

Collins is taking the only approach he can take.

    1. Scott says:

Actually, he is taking the only apporach he knows how to take. He is old-school, he just wants to play baseball and he wants the best out of the players. No different than any manager with heart at any level. And I think he is right to take this approach becuase if you don’t want to play and you give up – that is not someone you want to be around. Look at J. Bay, he definitly wouldnot be around or at least he wouldn’t be playing if he wasn’t giving his all. Giving your all in anything should be the norm in anything any of us do.
