7-Year-Old Bronx Girl Killed After Being Struck By Falling Metal Gate

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police say a 7-year-old Bronx girl was killed over the weekend after a derailed, heavy metal gate fell on top of her.

The tragic incident happened Sunday outside 1687 Banyer Place around around 5 p.m. in the Soundview section. Neighbors took Katy Castoire to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Witnesses who spoke with 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa described the chaotic scene.

"It fell on top of her and broke her skull," said one witness.

"Her aunt's screaming 'please help me, I don't know what to do.' Her mother's hysterical," another woman said.

Residents have removed all the derailed gates and piled them to the side. They say two other kids were injured the same way and complaints to the landlord have gone without an answer.

A makeshift memorial featuring stuffed animals and lighted candles now stand in front of a tree, just inches from where Castoire died.

The owners of the building released a statement saying they are devastated by the tragedy and are "investigating the causes and will do what is required."
