New York City Bodega Owners Protest Outdoor ATM Ban

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bodega owners are holding a protest against the new law banning ATMs from sidewalks in New York City.

The store owners say the machines should be allowed to stay because they provide the community service of saving people a trip to the bank.

Assuming their protest doesn't cause any changes to the law, owners of sidewalk ATMs will have until Sept. 1 to get them off the streets or face a $5,000 fine.

"New York City has become one of the most unwelcoming cities in the country for small businesses," said Ramon Murphy President of the Bodegueros Association of the US.

"The mayor has decided that these machines must be kept indoors and not outdoors simply because he feels that they take up too much space on the sidewalks and that these machines are, in essence, not complying with city rules and regulationsm," said Fernando Mateo spokesman of the Bodegueros Association of the US.

Mateo said small business owners are shocked and outraged by the law.
