Teufel Vs. Teufel: Ex-Mets Star Loses Buffalo Bisons Triple-A Game To Son
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Well, no need for a scouting report here.
Tim Teufel's son made his Triple-A debut Thursday night -- and dad was there, all right.
The former Mets star, known for his "Teufel Shuffle" batting stance, was in the other dugout, managing the Mets affiliate Buffalo Bisons.
Shawn Teufel struck out seven in six sharp innings to lead the Toledo Mud Hens to a 4-0 victory. The 25-year-old left-hander allowed three hits and walked three for the Detroit Tigers' top minor league team.
"Well, that was unique," Tim Teufel said with a crooked smile. "I was nervous as a dad. He did a remarkable job. He was probably a lot more calm than I was."
The elder Teufel played for Minnesota, the Mets and San Diego over 11 years in the majors.
He is most known for his six seasons with New York, winning the World Series in 1986.
Shawn Teufel, born in July of that title season, was 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA with the Single-A Lakeland before being promoted for a spot start.
"Nerves weren't a part of it," Teufel said of his first Triple-A start. "I was told by a lot of people to 'Keep doing what you're doing.' You have to just pitch your game."
Tim Teufel was drafted by the Twins and played for Toledo during his own minor league career.
"Him in the Mud Hen uniform, it's funny," he said. "I played for the Toledo Mud Hens so it's a unique time. It's almost like somebody upstairs put this all together."
