ATLANTIC BEACH, NY (WCBS 880) — Lifeguards are on the lookout for medical waste at eight Long Island beaches.

The eight beaches in Atlantic Beach had to be shut down Friday and could be closed again after dozens of needles, syringes, pill bottles and other medical waste washed ashore.

Lifeguard Knoll Kennedy put on protective gear to clean up the mess.

“I have no idea where it came from,” said Kennedy. “I am guessing from ships dumping the waste or from a lot of the rain we have been having recently, it probably washed in.”

Kennedy also said two years ago, he had to go to the doctor after he stepped on a needle.

Another beach employee, Ryan Surkes, said it was just plan scary to see.

“It was really disgusting,” said Surkes “I didn’t want to go in the water.”
