Report: Mets Gauge Mike Pelfrey's Interest In Becoming Next Season's Closer

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- If you watch the games or read the box scores, you know the Mets' bullpen is bad.

Relievers have yielded at least one run in 21 of 26 games. On Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, the bullpen wasted a nice effort by starter R.A. Dickey, giving up four runs -- three earned -- en route to a 6-2 loss.

Over that 26-game span, New York's bullpen has recorded six losses and a 5.95 ERA.

To make matters worse, the Mets are now six games under .500 for the first time since May 4.

So what's the answer? It might just be Mike Pelfrey.

According to the New York Daily News, the Mets have discussed the possibility of converting Pelfrey to the closer role for 2012.

The paper reported that when manager Terry Collins asked Pelfrey if he'd be interested in closing next season, the starter responded: "Absolutely."

But not so fast. The Daily News added that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson "did not hatch" the plan and "is said to be averse to it."

If the GM isn't keen on the idea, it likely won't happen. But the Mets will have to do something about their sub par pen.

"I should've stayed with R.A," a frustrated Collins said after the loss on Sunday. "I thought we'd play to win there. (The bullpen) just can't stop anybody."

Should the Mets make Pelfrey their closer next season? Sound off below...
