NJ Ban On Bath Salts, Known As 'Pamela's Law,' Signed By Gov. Christie

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has signed into law a ban on synthetic drugs known as "bath salts."

The law makes it a crime to possess or sell the chemicals used to make the drugs.

Marketed as bath salts or incense, the powdery substances are snorted by users and mimic the effects of cocaine and methamphetamines.

The bath salts can cause health issues ranging from increased blood pressure and heart rate to hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

The law is named "Pamela's Law" after Pamela Schmidt, a Rutgers student believed to have been killed by someone using the drug.

Christie gave his final approval to the law on Monday. It passed through the Legislature with overwhelming support.
