Report: Converting Mike Pelfrey To Closer 'Squashed' By Mets
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Mike Pelfrey to the bullpen?
Sure, it's a good headline. But in theory, making Pelfrey next season's closer -- and finding someone to replace his 200-plus innings -- doesn't make much sense.
Mets manager Terry Collins admitted on Monday that he has discussed the possibility with Pelfrey.
"I just thought about Mike because he's got a great arm and I know he's durable," Collins said before the Phillies' 10-0 rout of the Mets.
But not so fast. The New York Daily News reported on Sunday that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson "did not hatch" the plan and "is said to be averse to it."
Today, the Newark Star-Ledger wrote that the front office "squashed" the idea. Jenrry Mejia, recovering from Tommy John surgery, is also unlikely to nab the role, according to the paper.
To Pelfrey's credit, he's all about helping the team win in 2012. If that means closing games, so be it.
"If the team wanted me to do it, I would," he said. "It would be fun if it ultimately came to that, but I don't think it is going to."
But again, it's very unlikely. Pelfrey gets too few swings-and-misses and is prone to losing control of his fastball.
And then there's that matter of eating innings.
"It's one thing to say," said Collins. "It's another thing to replace 200 innings."
