NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — An imam who works as a chaplain at a New York City jail has been arrested for allegedly propositioning an undercover police officer posing as a prostitute.

The Wall Street Journal says Aziz-Ud Bin Bilal was arrested Tuesday for allegedly offering $25 for sex to the officer who was part of a sting operation called “Losing Proposition.”

He’s worked at Rikers Island since 1990.

It hasn’t been determined if Bilal, also known as Charles Bilal, has a lawyer. He couldn’t be reached for comment.

The Department of Correction said Bilal was suspended without pay. The agency also is investigating imam in a separate incident involving a handgun that allegedly was found inside his car last year.

No criminal charges have been filed.

Convicted felons should not be employed in any capacity by any law enforcement entity. How widespread is this practice?

  2. Glenn Erdmann says:

Why is this criminal even employed by the department, he belongs behind the bars. Use common sense, he is probably the one who smuggles contraband into the jails. Retired CO.

  3. i consistently find religious people to be 10 times more wretched than atheists. why is that?

  4. Imam or Criminal? says:

    Here’s more:

In July 2010, a city marshal found a 9-mm. semi-automatic pistol in Bilal’s 2004 Mercedes Benz after it was towed to a Queens impound lot. The incident was investigated, but no arrests were made.

Anyone with common sense knows whose gun that was. He didn’t get locked up because it couldn’t be proven.

  5. Holy Moley!! says:

There is so much more to his story, do a quick internet serach and find much mor, such as:

“Bilal, whose job at Rikers keeps him on the lawful side of the bars, is no stranger to getting locked up. He’s been arrested 18 times since 1970, sources said. His rap sheet includes collars for robbery, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and bribery of a public official”
The man should not be a Prison Imam, if an Imam at all.

I would say something about this but being Catholic we had our own sex scandal. God help us if we can’t trust so called holy men.

    1. KPMc says:

Humankind hasn’t been able to “trust” self-proclaimed holy men ever! Why do you think the present day is any different?

The sword of islam slices the pepperoni again.

    1. No Pork for you!! says:

He’s supposedly a Muslim Imam and it’s Ramadan, he can’t have pepperoni, but I guess there is no rule about giving it. He probably eats Bacon every morning and Pork Rinds at night. Obviously the rules of the Muslim religion don’t apply to him.
