Bone Bruise KO's Mets Catcher Josh Thole; MRI On Wrist Friday
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Josh Thole is in pain, but hopes to be with the Mets on Friday.
The catcher left New York's 7-5 win over the Florida Marlins in the second inning Thursday night because of a bone bruise on his left wrist.
Thole was hit when he was crossed up on pitch selection during an at-bat against Emilio Bonifacio in the second inning. He said he expected a slider but Miguel Batista, making his first start for New York, threw a fastball.
Thole stayed in his crouch until a Mets trainer and manager Terry Collins went out to check on him. He fell to his knees after trying to squeeze the trainer's hand.
Thole was wearing a black brace on his hand after the Mets' 7-5 victory. He said X-rays were clear and he will remain in New York to be examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Friday, where he will have an MRI, while the team goes to Washington. Thole hopes to join the team after that.
"It was pretty painful. I dislocated my thumb in 2009 and this was worse," Thole said.
Mike Nickeas replaced Thole and had an RBI single in the eighth.
Also, the Mets said Ruben Tejada had a bruised left hand after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, one of two times he was hit Friday.
