NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Travelers passing through Newark Liberty Airport soon won’t have to have their body images displayed when they pass through security checkpoints.

The airport will be one of the first in the region to implement some new enhanced security technology that will do away with the controversial body scanners. It will be installed in about 40 airports over the next several months.

Donald Drummer, director of security, said the star of the show will be a screen that will display a big “Okay” once a passenger is cleared.

The TSA says the new scanners will detect potential threat items but will produce a generic, computerized outline of the person’s body.

“In this case there will be a silhouette on the screen that both the passengers and our officers can see and they’ll know where to target,” Drummer said.

Yellow boxes will appear on the silhouette denoting items that needed to be removed, such as cellphones or keys.

“This makes the entire process much more transparent,” the TSA’s Lisa Farbstein said. “The transportation security officer and the passenger both, exactly at the same time, can look at the screen and know what’s going on.”

The body imaging machines currently in use have been heavily criticized for showing images of naked bodies.

This is the same failed technology that Germany rejected — 49% false positives.

Just a dog and pony show & more federal money down the drain.

I travelled through Amsterdam in April. They had body scanners. No one complained, no one whined and that was that. We need to stop being idiots and just let the TSA do their job! It just might save lives.

I’m not complaining, I was standing right there watching the monitor when you went through the scanner. It was a great, big, bouncy fun time for all concerned. As for the boys in the back keeping an eye on the pictures – Well lets just say you became pin-up of the month!

We’re glad you think this is all about your safety! Come back soon so we can scan and feel you up in the name of security again!

And the radiation exposure is still the same. But don’t worry, they use MAGIC radiation to see through your clothes.
