Park Slope Residents Band Together To Stop Sex Attacker

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police say a serial sex attacker in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn may have struck again.

Investigators say the suspect has attacked at least eight women since spring.

Now, the neighborhood is fighting to take back their streets, reports CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez.

Vigilant residents in Park Slope say they refuse to be intimidated by a serial sex attacker.

So neighbors are doing what they can to make sure he doesn't strike again.

"I think if we all come together and the perp hears this and sees this, and sees that we're not going to stand for it, than hopefully something will come of it," resident Nicole Connolly said Monday night.

Members of a neighborhood advocacy group called "Safe Slope" were passing out fliers, warning residents about the sex attacker.

Many locals say they won't forget the terror in the voice of the victim who's attack was caught by a surveillance camera back in March.

"You sort of get that feeling of a little bit of anger and fear," one person said.

Police say since March the same man has attacked at least eight women in Brooklyn's 68th and 72nd precincts, including Bay Ridge and Sunset Park. Investigators say he may have struck again last week on a tree-lined street in Park Slope.

Police say at around 11:30 p.m. last Thursday, a woman was walking down 12th Street of Prospect Park West. A man grabbed her from behind and tried to put his hand up her dress. She screamed and scratched at her attacker and he took off.

Safe Slope leaders said they had to take action and are now planning a "take back our streets" rally.

"We're just devastated and really just wanted to do something and to be able to get the community together. And so we could come together and do something positive and finally feel empowered," said Jessica Silk of Safe Slope.

If you want to help take back our streets, the rally starts at 8 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Prospect Avenue railroad station on 17th Street.

Police said they are still investigating last week's attack, and it has not yet been linked to the serial sex attacker.
