NYC Hacks Fight To Remove Racy Advertisements From Taxis

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A group of taxi drivers have put the brakes on racy ads splashed across their cabs.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission held a hearing Thursday about billboards on taxis, and drivers finally got the TLC to give those who own their vehicles the right to choose whether their taxis will carry ads.

"The issue is who should have a right to put the rooftop ad? I think drivers should have that right," one driver at the hearing said.

Many of the complaints were because strip club billboards in particular offended the moral values of several drivers.

"I have to go home, and sometimes my children also ride in the cab, and they can see it. One or two times they asked me questions about it when they see the ad, and I feel embarrassment when I don't have an answer about it," one driver told CBS 2's Pablo Guzman.

"They ought to be able to decide what ads go on the top of it, especially if it's parked in the driveway, their neighbors see the car, they're responsible for it," said David Yassky, TLC Commissioner.

Not all drivers are opposed to the billboards on moral grounds. Some just don't want billboards on their roofs.

According to the TLC, drivers who have billboards on their cabs get paid an extra $125 a month.
