Toddler Shot In Head On Staten Island Expected To Recover

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Eighteen-month-old Samayah Bailey not only survived being shot in the head, but is even holding a bottle by herself as she recovers in the hospital.

She lost her left eye and has had three surgeries after she was shot in her stroller on Wednesday.

Doctors said Samayah also had blood clots in her brain which were removed during surgery.

She's still in critical condition but is expected to recover.

Damark King, 19, of Staten Island was arrested Thursday for, police said, firing Wednesday afternoon in an apartment complex playground and courtyard and hitting Bailey in the head.

"It's heartbreaking. It's a baby. It's my niece," said Samaya's aunt, Christine Bailey.

The child's stroller was cordoned off by crime scene tape and marks the location where, police say, Bailey was caught in the crossfire. Police said the stroller was stained with blood.

"It was a senseless shooting. An innocent baby got shot, being outside playing, on a nice day," said Patricia Mahoney, Samaya's grandmother.
