NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Monday morning’s commute will feature higher tolls and fares for Hudson River crossings.

The Port Authority’s controversial toll and fare hikes took effect and now commuters are paying as much as 50 percent more to cross bridges and tunnels.

“Man, that’s all we need,” one driver told 1010 WINS’ Terry Sheridan at the Holland Tunnel. “I don’t like it. It’s too much.”

As of 3 a.m. Sunday, the cost for crossing bridges and tunnels jumped $4 to a new total of $12. For E-ZPass users, tolls spiked $1.50 to $9.50.

If you pay cash, there’s a $2 surcharge.

Train passengers are also on the hook: PATH fares went up to $2.

While these tolls and fares may be tough to take, they’re scheduled to rise even further, with Hudson River tolls at $12.50 by the 2015 and PATH train fares up to $2.75.

Residents on both sides of the Hudson were not pleased with the hikes.

“I think it’s terrible. Times are rough, rough for everyone,” said Jibran Khan of Queens.

“It’s nuts. I mean you can only tax people so many times and raise, because the economy’s not that great,” said Robert Bordeaux of Jersey City.

Representatives from the Port Authority said they needed the increase to offset low revenue due to the down economy. Officials also said they needed more money to help pay for World Trade Center construction.

AAA said the use of money for that type of construction violates federal law. Robert Sinclair, of AAA, said a prior legal ruling states that toll revenue must be used for transportation initiatives.

“We think that increasing tolls to pay for costs over at the World Trade Center violates that legal decision and will impede interstate commerce and establish a new and ill-conceived policy of diverting toll revenues to local real estate development projects,” Sinclair said.

AAA is suing to block the toll hikes, but in the meantime the only choice drivers have is how to pay for them.

“If your salaries are not being raised, it’s costing you,” one driver in Jersey City told CBS 2’s Kathryn Brown. “What are you going to do? Do I pay my rent, do I pay my mortgage, do I eat, do I get my medication?”

Now I know why the PA has police officers with guns at thier tolls. It’s “highway robbery” at its best, and it’s legal !?!?!?!?

Just another reason I don’t have a car anymore or drive. They get you at the pump. the insurance companies get you, the dealership empties your pockets for service charges and the bridges and tolls take whatevers left. By getting ride of my car I knocked out at least four service providers that are serving nobody but themselves. Oh yes, how can I leave out DMV (a profit center in the food chain of life next to pick your pockets) and the cops who circle the wagons with impunity handing out tickets for any possible actual or percieved violation. Its all ugly.

Seeing as this insane (and more to come!!) toll increase is going to rebuild the WTC, I’m gonna say the terrorists have won. They’re still f&*#@ing with us ten years on.

  5. Chez Ong says:

All businesses should increase their rates by 50% in one shot. We all need to make up the money to pay for the new toll rates. Oh wait, we can’t do that because, you know, there are competitors for most businesses.

This rate increase has to be illegal in some way. With no competitors, the PA can charge whatever they want. It’s ridiculous how instead of revising how money is spent, they just stick their hand out and pretend that noone will know the better.

Unions, pensions, inflated salaries, mismanagement, complacent management, lack of creativity at the leadership level are all reasons for this ridiculous increase!

To me all this show down with Gov Cuomo and the one in Jersey was just show off ,it’s a proven fact that governement dont give them all they do is give themselves raises and live off the back of the people that support their effortless venture. Why would Cuomo let the raise take place ,these politician are all the same with different shirts.Look at the Road and the bridges,.I completely agreed they should start replacing those workers from the Port Authority including the highest paid police force in the Nation .We drivers are paying for these guys to live well off our backs.

This is so they won’t have to cut any staff or union benefits and to pay for real estate development. THat’s why unions flooded the hearings with members.

Time to Layoff employees at Port Authority that will reduce cost of operating this government entity

  9. DJD says:

The Port Authority should be downright sued and I hope AAA leads the charge! Commuters should not be paying to rebuild the world trade towers. Toll money should be used for our roads and bridges, not on real estate ventures that are MILLIONS OVER BUDGET!

Last year the Port Authority paid $86 Million in Overtime to its employees. They could have hired a huge work force and spent a fraction of that. Port Authority is an example of a public good company that has no competition and no accountability! They pushed this toll increase with massive haste all while bombing local news outlets and marketing avenues with propaganda about creating jobs. Its another disgusting example of money mismanagement and the buck being passed to tax payers and commuters.

PS, AAA can sue and it has nothing to do with damages. It has to do with a law on the books in 87 about toll rates and unfair increases.

wait a second, weren’t the towers insured ??,wasn’t there a big argument about the insurance covering one tower or two ??
seriously where is all the MTA money going ?, everyday I see a long line of cars and trucks on the GW, it isn’t as if the flow of traffic is low, when it comes to revenue ???

How in the hell did politicians ever get such control over our purse. Parking meters
just popped out of the ground one morning and have been here ever since. Peeps
were never asked about it they just put them up. From ten cents an hour to .75 and still climbing. smokersodysseycom Peeps should have the right to have them taken out. But alas its a cash cow same as the toll plazas…taxation without representation.

“AAA is suing to block the toll hikes….”

…even though the AAA itself (as an organization) has not suffered financial damage and thus has no standing to sue.
