Police in Nassau County tell WCBS 880 that two men convinced or bribed clerks at Target stores to use expired coupons over and over again.

The clerks never collected the coupons.

Lt. Kevin Smith said this was a major operation because, in the end, the duo stole over $570,000 worth of merchandise.

"They went in and very carefully selected certain employees to kind of help them with this," said Smith.

The coupons were worth, say, $20 each. When the bill came to $300, the clerk scanned the coupons over and over until the bill was down to zero, Lt. Smith said.

Police arrested 33-year-old Ali Jaafar of Rockville, Maryland and 28-year-old Hassan Soueidan of Flushing, according to published reports.

Police are still investigating what happened to the merchandise. Several employees have reportedly been fired.
