NEW YORK  (CBSNewYork) — It seems like only yesterday we were awwww-ing over adorable little Dakota Fanning in movies like “I Am Sam” and “Charlotte’s Web.”

Well, that cute little blond girl is all grown up and attending college in New York City.

Fanning recently started her freshman year at New York University, and according to The New York Post, she wants nothing to do with dorm life. Instead, the 17-year old ‘Twilight’ actress is instead living in a two-bedroom rental at 225 Lafayette St.

While the rest of her classmates will be hanging out in the dining hall, Dakota is more likely to be mingling with her high society neighbors, like, John Mayer and Keith Richards’ daughter, Theodora.

Another difference between Dakota and her fellow freshman: Clothing.

Fanning told PEOPLE magazine during Fashion Week that she won’t be rocking the classic college sweatpants uniform.

“Going to college is a bit different than going back to high school,” Dakota said to PEOPLE at a Marc Jacobs event. “You can kind of wear whatever you want, and I had a uniform in high school.”

“If you ever catch me in sweatpants in class, that’s not good,” Fanning declared. “I’ve tried not to dress like that.”

It looks like this 17-year old Hollywood transplant has New York living down to a science.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go take my diploma and sweatpants and have a good cry.
