Jay-Z: New Jersey Nets To Become 'Brooklyn Nets'

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Jay-Z and the Nets are in a Brooklyn state of mind.

"We've decided that the final name would be the Brooklyn Nets," the hip hop mogul -- and franchise part-owner -- announced Monday.

"I'm really giddy right now. Brooklyn Nets, yeah," he said during a televised interview.

Jay-Z, who grew up in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses, will celebrate the Barclays Center's September 2012 opening with "one, two, maybe three" concerts. Dates haven't been set.

The Nets are scheduled to move from New Jersey for the 2012-13 season.

"It's great. I have a reason to come to Brooklyn often, which is fantastic for me," said Jay-Z. "This is my foundation."

The Nets will attempt to convert Knicks fans with billboards, advertisements on phone booths, taxi tops and a quarter-million coffee cups, the New York Post reported on Monday.

"We'll be blanketing Wall Street with the coffee cups," Nets CEO Brett Yormark said, according to the paper. "There will be great concerts and other entertainment -- so who better to deliver that message than the world's No. 1 entertainer, Jay-Z?"

But not everyone was impressed with the team's media blitz tip off.

"Not getting rid of the name Nets is a major mistake," tweeted CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell. "Chance to rebrand themselves, get attention."

"While we always respect any competition," MSG said in a statement, "the Garden will always be the Garden."

Jay-Z later announced the name change at a press conference across the street from the arena's Prospect Heights construction site.
