4 Shot In Courtyard Of Newark Public Housing Complex

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- There is still no word on the conditions of four people who were shot in Newark Monday afternoon.

It is unclear if there have been any fatalities, but all four victims were taken from the scene to the hospital for treatment.

The victims are between the ages of 17 and 27.  They were shot in Kemsco Village, which is a public housing complex located on Stone Street in the city's North Ward around 2 p.m.

Neighbors told 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon the incident may have been in retaliation for a shooting that occurred two weeks ago.  Some neighbors also reportedly heard more than 15  gunshots.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward as they continue to investigate.  They have asked anyone with information to use the anonymous tip line, 877-695-8477, to contact authorities.

According to a news release, police "have neither identified the suspects nor a solid motive" for the violence.

Rincon reported that police were probing a red SUV for evidence at the scene.

Community activists also showed up on the scene at one point to criticize Newark Mayor Cory Booker for the lack of police presence in the area, Rincon reported.
