Nassau County Might Close Two Police Precincts
MINEOLA, NY (WCBS 880) - Two police precincts may be shut down as Nassau County faces a $310 million budget gap.

Nassau County PBA president James Carver says that if two precincts close their doors, there could be more crime.
"Worst case scenario, yes, I believe that not having a precinct, the presence of having a precinct in an area, gives the appearance that we have given up, that the police department has given up in that area," he told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.
Carver said under the proposed county plan, to save $15 million dollars, two of the eight precincts would close and 81 people, including detectives and commanders, would be laid off.
"It's very upsetting. Nassau County has been known for its low crime rate and one of the things is that having a police precinct in the neighborhood gives security of that community," he said.
Carver believes Nassau County should be hiring more police officers, not firing the ones it already has.
It is not known yet which two precincts would be closed, but the plan would not call for any officers to be taken off the street.
