NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –Police arrested a late Tuesday in a recent groping incident and are investigating if the same person is behind a dozen sexual assaults in South Brooklyn since March.

Police say Adolfo Martinez, 26, faces charges of sex abuse in the 3rd degree.

Police Say Martinez Has Confessed To The Sunset Park Attack. 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria Reports.

Martinez has confessed to an attack in Sunset Park, reported 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria. He has also indicated to authorities that he has “done this before,” but doesn’t remember precisely where or when.

D’Auria reported that there is at least one other arrest on his record. Police will be taking Martinez through a series of line-ups for possible identification by other grope victims.

Martinez allegedly grabbed a woman from behind and groped her as she was walking near 36thStreet and between Fourth and Fifth Avenues early Monday morning.  He was picked up by police on 42nd Street in Brooklyn just blocks from where the alleged assault occurred.

“She was attacked by a man who pulled her down by her chest. She screamed,” the victim’s sister told CBS 2’s Sean Hennessey on Monday night.

The suspect took off running when the victim started screaming. Police say Martinez matches the person seen in surveillance fleeing the scene of the attack, D’Auria reported.

Women throughout Brooklyn have been unnerved by the attacks and in Sunset Park, the reaction to the arrest has been tempered with caution.

“Really happy to hear about it. For months, I know, a lot of people in the community have been uncomfortable. I certainly have and to know that hopefully they’ve caught the right person,” Jennifer Carnig told CBS 2’s Mark Morgan.

Police are questioning Martinez about the other attacks and have not ruled out his involvement in those.  However, Martinez’s family said that he couldn’t possibly be the suspect given that he is married with an 8-month-old baby.

The NYPD released several sketches of the groping suspect – or suspects – and at least one of the assault in March was caught on camera.

The most recent sketch was released late Tuesday, just hours before Martinez’s arrest.

“We’ve certainly increased our uniformed presence there. We’ve done continual canvasses of the area. We’re doing everything that we can do. We’re going to ratchet it up even more,” Commissioner Ray Kelly said prior to Martinez’s arrest.

This isn’t the first time police have arrested an alleged groper. Last week, police arrested Federico Chamorro Yax, 22, and accused him of involvement in two sexual assaults.

    yet another deSPICable

  2. good idea says:

    This is what you do-
start a non for profit agency.
call it the victim justice fund.
start a website, ask for donations from around the country.
the money raised would be used to pay off inmates and co’s to take justice on dirt bags like this.
the donators would have a say as to what punishment they want.
for example, for this guy, it might be a stick in the rear.
that might cost 20,000 for example.
pay one of the gangs, it could work.

  4. thor's hammer says:

well loser, guess you figured out giving yourself up meant potentially jail would offer “protective custody.” the victims should really decide how much punishment & what really constitutes justice. coward, lowlife. no perks for perps in prison. justice for the victims only!!!!

  5. Richie says:

I’d like to see a cocentration camp built for punks like these and torture them like no tommorrow and televise it . I think someone watching and thinking about doing this would change there mind in a hurry . These people can’t live in society period. It’s time to clean up and eraticate these animals.

  6. Greg says:

I live in Sunset Park, and I’d like to get all Paul Kersey all over these f’ing guys….

      yeah….new jersey

Another fine specimen from south of the border.

  9. CT Native says:

Do you have REAL proof of your claim, or are you just another ignorant race baiter?

    1. Michael H. says:

Meme posts this on nearly every article and has yet to be banned from posting by CBS. CBS allows hate speech on their comments section regularly and fails to adequately moderate these threads.

      1. ken88 says:

“Hate Speech” = Free Speech you disagree with

        1. Michael H. says:

Too bad that CBS’s comment section is not subject to the 1st Amendment, because the terms of use linked at the bottom of this website explicitly ban hate speech. Calling the Muslim population of the United States “terrorists” is hate speech at its worst.

          1. ken88 says:

Not CBS, they of course as a private concern can remove whatever they feel like. No, I meant our fellow citizens who feel it is there job to point fingers at “hate criminals”, or “hate speakers”.

            1. Michael H. says:

You don’t see a problem with somebody who says “ALL MUSLIMS IN AMERICA ARE TERRORISTS”? Sure he has the right to say it but I have the right to call him a bigot for saying it.

    2. CTNativeDope says:

He’s as illegal as you are ignorant…Wake up liberals. Stop protecting illegal, aliens……….

  10. John Marin says:

The suspect apprehended and labelled Hispanic appears Mexican or Central American. An Hispanic is a Spaniard from Europe not the Americas. A surname from Spain such as Martinez does not make one a member of any one particular race. The suspect shown here has a noticeable absence of facial and bodily hair which is one of the characteristics of Native Americans. Of course to understand these subtle differences one must be literate and educated which unfortunately is not a trait common to many people in government and the media.

    1. Michael H. says:

Hispanic in modern terms encompasses anybody of Spanish or Latin American descent. That means anywhere from, Spain or Mexico on south and includes Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Times change, as do the meanings of words.

  11. stacey says:

It was Vanderbilt STREET not Avenue…big difference two completely different places. Get the facts straight please!

    1. Vivid says:

Where have all the good proofreaders and fact checkers gone?

  12. Catskill Park Ranger says:

Seems that being a pervert and getting a date is getting to be tough these days. What ever happened to free love ??? I remember back in the day when I would just hang out on a bench in Washington Square park and have woman pick me up and grope me. Times sure have changed. Then again, these guys look like weasels and I can see them not being as apealing to woman as I am. LOL

    1. Vivid says:

These acts have nothing to do with “free love” or any kind of loving behavior. It’s abuse. Molestation. A crime. An act that’s completely unwanted by the women who have been on the receiving end.

  13. Liberals Are Evil says:

Throw this lowlife trash in jail and have somone grope him. We’ll see how much this pervert likes it.

    1. Sylvia Bidet says:

I think that you are wrong. Mr. Martinez, if found guilty, should remain free and given counseling to curtail his misplaced grabbiness.

      1. jtorres says:

You are wrong, Ms. Bidet. Groping almost always is the first step. If they are not stopped, they get more violent and agressive until you have a serial rapist/murderer on your hands. I wonder if you would be as understanding if it happened to you or a loved one.

        1. Carol says:

I think she was being sarcastic.

    2. fabriella says:

First off you are right – liberals ARE evil. Second of all, I can’t wait until Bubba plays grope’em with this dirtbag.

  14. Tom McNamara says:

I have a much better idea. I bought my wife a “neck knife” that she wears around her neck on a lanyard. Can be accessed instantly. I wonder why NYPD doesn’t tell women to arm themselves…….probably cause they’d be missing on all the overtime if someone actually stabbed this prick.
