Fundraiser Held For Staten Island Toddler Samayah Bailey Who Lost Eye In Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The community is coming together to help a Staten Island toddler who lost an eye to a stray bullet.

Doctors removed 20-month-old Samayah Bailey's left eye after she was shot in the head while sitting in her stroller last month.

Police say she was caught in the crossfire after a 19-year-old opened fire and arrested Damark King in connection with the shooting.

Samayah had to go through several surgeries, which included removing blood clots from her brain.

Wednesday night, a fundraiser was held to help the family with medical bills and living expenses.

"My heart went out to the Bailey family, particularly baby Samayah and we wanted to do something as a community to help her where others have failed," said fundraiser co-host Michael Ryan.

A foundation is also donating a prosthetic eye to the little girl and the family has found a doctor who will perform the surgery for free.
