State Police: Sex Assault Suspect Commits Suicide
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- State police say a northern New Jersey man committed suicide when authorities came to his home this week to arrest him on sex assault charges.
Sgt. Stephen Jones tells The Jersey Journal that 29-year-old Eric Martin shot himself in the chest around 7 p.m. Thursday, shortly after authorities arrived at his Jersey City home.
Officers initially were met by a woman who refused to let them inside. But they entered the home a short time later after hearing a gunshot and soon found Martin unresponsive on a bed.
Authorities had gone to the home to arrest Martin on charges of sex assault, attempted kidnapping and impersonating a police officer brought by Somerset County authorities. He also was facing similar charges stemming from an attack in Hudson County last month.
