Shannon Gilbert has been missing for more than a year, but her friends and family have not given up hope.

"You know we have to keep this story out there," family friend Michelle Cutler said at a vigil on Oak Beach, Long Island.

Police have discovered what are believed to be the remains of 10 victims along the south shore stretch of Long Island, but Gilbert's body was not among them. The investigation is still going on.

Cutler said despite the fact that they still don't know Gilbert's whereabouts, the birthday remains important.

"They need support and if I can help them do that, then that's why I'm here," she said.
