Angie Carpenter, the Republican candidate, says jobs would be her top priority if elected.

"Creating jobs, retaining jobs. The name of the economic development game is retention," she said.

Carpenter, the county treasurer, says maintaining the jobs we now have would be easier than finding new ones.

Steve Bellone, the Democratic challenger and current Babylon town supervisor, agrees, but adds accountability will go a long way to building a stronger economy.

"We're going to create accountability in Suffolk County government. If we're going to solve the fiscal crisis we have to make this government more efficient," he said.

Ballone says his experience as Babylon town supervisor has prepared him well to run the county.
