NYC Offering Prescription Drug Buy-Back Program
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In an effort to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications, the city is holding a drug buy-back program on Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 15 sites around New York City will be accepting donations of old medications.
It's all part of a partnership between the Drug Enforcement Administration, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for New York City.
The goal is to combat the abuse of prescription drugs.
"Some of the drugs in our medicine cabinets can be as addictive, harmful, and even as lethal as those sold illegally in the streets.
While there has been a decline in the rate of drug deaths involving heroin, cocaine, and methadone over the past few years, rates of death involving prescription drugs have increased," District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement. "I encourage all New Yorkers to join us in our fight against prescription drug abuse this weekend by donating their unused and expired medication to collection sites across the city."
