Bellone, a Democrat, wrote the $660 check to pay for David McKell's services.

Now, Angie Carpenter, the Republican candidate for County Executive says her opponent owes the public an apology for, "using Santa Claus as political scam."

"They create this scam of Santagate, you know that Santa is being fired and he rides in on a horse as the white knight and saves the day," Carpenter told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "This is not appropriate."

Bellone hasn't commented on the allegation, but a spokesman for his campaign called the charge phony and a last-minute act of political desperation.

Meanwhile, Carpenter says she'd rather be discussing other issues.

"This is a time for the people, not politics," said Carpenter.
