Scott Stringer Unhappy With Occupy Wall Street Eviction From Zuccotti Park, Treatment Of Press

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer says he is very disturbed that the eviction of the Occupy Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park has resulted in a number of arrests, including a number of reporters who were trying to cover the police action.

"I believe that part of what makes our city great is the tolerance of different opinions and the press' ability to cover major events," said Stringer on Tuesday.

Stringer says the city owes an explanation of the circumstances surrounding the fact reporters were kept out of the immediate area.

"From what is emerging right, I do think the police commissioner has to tell us exactly what happened this morning," said Stringer.

He said the public relies on reporters to tell us what is going on.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said around 200 people were arrested. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said about 142 of those arrested were in the park and another 50 or 60 were in the streets nearby.
