GREENVALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A professor at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University accidentally shot himself today, the school said.

The unidentified professor was taken to an area hospital and is expected to recover. Nassau Police described the professor as a 72-year-old former New York City law enforcement officer.

Nassau Police say the professor got help from nearby students who were waiting for their class to begin. They called 911 and waited with him until help arrived.

Long Island University rules forbid any sort of weapons on the campus.

The school did not shut down, and classes and campus activities went forward as usual.

No charges have been filed.

The investigation is continuing.

    Wonder if the professor will be charged with a crime (discharging his weapon) as was the case in Manhattan with Plexico Buris? And will he serve time as Plexico did?
